Keep in mind, with any insurance policy, on average, the insurance company has to win.

In other words, they will take in more money than they ever pay out.

If it were the other way around, they would go out of business. My feeling is, that one is better off (if one can be disciplined enough) to put the money that you would have spent on the insurance premiums, and put it in a seperate account, that you don't touch, except for vet bills.

On average that way, you'll win. The only time this doesn't work, is if you have some large, unexpected bill show up that you can't absorb. In these cases, you can often secure some kind of loan or financing option to pay for the deficit.

Pet insurance is good for unexpected accidents and illnesses. They can get expensive quickly, so it's nice to have insurance to cover the costs. Pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, so if your pet is already sick or injured, it is unlikely that pet insurance will cover the costs to treat it.

For other costs like regular exams and vaccines, it's best to self-budget since these costs are expected. Some pet insurance companies offer coverage, but it is typically not cost-effective. (Imagine paying an extra $200 per year on your premiums for $200 worth of routine coverage...)

A few good questions to ask when researching pet insurance are:
1. Does the policy cover everything? Hereditary and congenital issues?
2. What are the payout limits? Will it be enough money for my worst case scenario?
3. How much does it cover for each condition?
4. What are the pricing and deductible options?
5. Is it an ongoing policy? If my pet has an illness during my first policy year, will it be covered the next policy year?

Be sure to do thorough research - Some plans don't pay based on your actual bill, but have lists of predetermined dollar amounts that they will pay for each condition which can be shockingly low in many cases. I have VPI, Veterinary Pet Insurance. It has been very helpful for one of my dogs, who has had many health issues over the past several years. It does not pay all the costs, but it helps with just about everything. There is a $50 deductible per illness. They have limits and so you will pay the difference out of pocket. How much you pay out of pocket depends on how expensive your vet is. I have the Premium coverage and would recommend that. In my experience, most vets want their money at the time of service, are not willing to reduce costs of take payments. My vets demand payment at the time of service, then VPI reimburses me for at least part of the costs. If you have a more agreeable vet, you can have the insurance paid directly to them and then pay the balance later. I wouldn't be without it! You never know when you will need it. My one dog has cost a fortune in vet bills and it has been very helpful to have the insurance. Additionally, I am finding that when faced with long term medications, I can save money by searching the web for sources other than my vet's office.

Environmental.. so im guessing it has to be a health hazard caused by the environment. Well huskies originated from a cold climate, and they have been taken out of their original environment... Countries like Australia which are really quite hot can cause health problems if people don't look after their husky properly during summer...etc.

So heres some requirements for looking after huskies during summer.
- make sure they hare shelter
- make sure they always have water... i cant think of any more, you can figure it out.

I 100% think we should limit the amount of children people are allowed to have. I wouldn't even go as far as to only have one kid, I think two would be just fine. Then you are maintaining the population (with a gentle decline due to death rate) and you don't end up with the "little Princes" issues of the Chinese policy.

I can't think of one issue that we face today that would not be improved by fewer people on this earth, period. Education, crime, the environment, everything. Whenever I see people having eight or nine kids, I cringe inwardly and always have to stop myself from asking who is going to pay for their college education (well, not usually anyone, which is a shame).

This is all very unrealistic, since the people who have the multiple children don't really see it from a resources perspective. It is quality, not quantity we need in our kids. The resources we have are limited. Place more resources with fewer kids and everyone wins.

But the Environmental Health Department in my county insists that they NEVER be used. If so, why? And why do products like Rid-X continue to be allowed on the market if they don't work or are harmful?

It is likely that your county uses its groundwater- good for them. Dunno if the product works, but the bacteria they use is not potable, so if the county uses their groundwater, they don't want it contaminated with bacteria and neither do you. See the source below for real details.

There has been some recent interest in this kind of issue, and I wondered just how we can help change attitudes to mental illness? I don't know how it is in other societies, but in my experience there tends to be a conflation of mental disorders. Some people seem to think that fairly minor disorders essentially spell a lifetime of homicidal violence form that person. Similarly, there is a real stigma involved; if mental illness is a problem for Western health professionals then surely it can't be helped by creating an atmosphere of stigma. After all, how can we treat mental illness when people are ashamed to admit to having such problems?

Anyway, I was wondering what you thought. Is education the answer? Legislation? What?

I think we are already raising awareness. Changing people's opinions is a slow process, especially when the opinion is engrained or it's something they fear or don't understand. It wasn't so long ago that people who suffered the same things we question here, were thrown into institutions, drugged into stupors, and left warehoused until they died.

Certainly things could be better, but I think it's important to recognize the progress we've already made. Just like any stigma or prejudice, we have a long road ahead of us. I believe things like this section of yahoo! Answers is a good thing. People share answers, but they also enlighten those who might not understand the intricacies, and the truth that mental illness does not always equal "crazy", "dangerous" or "hopeless".

I think the progress in the scientific and medical fields are also helping our case. Much more is known now than say even 30 yrs ago. No longer are we doing such horrendous treatments as lobotomies, and thermal shock... and even though electroshock is still being used, it is much less horrible and much more humane than before. These disorders are managed much better and results are amazing.

I truly doubt the efficacy of legislation helping much. We've tried to legislate away prejudice of many forms and it simply doesn't work. I think education, awareness, and further study and treatment practices are the only hope.

How do I get Travel/Health Insurance in Vancouver on a working Visa?

I am moving from Australia to Vancouver in August, obviously I will have my normal travel insurance, but since I will be in vancouver for 2 years on a working visa - I would be looking at getting something alot cheaper than travel insurance. What would be the best option for me? I thought about just getting travel insurance for the first month or 2, then once I am settled down look for a cheaper option. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The government health care plan in BC is called BC Medical Services Plan(BCMSP), and their website will have info on whether or not you would qualify for it, or at least you can email to ask. Even if you qualify, there will be a waiting period of between 2 and 3 months after you apply before it comes into effect so be sure to have travel medical insurance in place during that time. If you don't qualify for the government plan, there are private companies who will sell you medical coverage. Pacific Blue Cross is one, Great West Life is another.

It's pretty unlikely that your health insurance in the USA will cover ANYTHING that happens out of the country.

Usually, you'd buy the travel insurance up front. Sometimes, you can continue to renew it month to month.

I don't know even one person who wants to be without health insurance. The doctors and the hospitals do use collection agencies to collect their money. So there is no need whatsoever to force anyone to buy it.

The only reason I can see as to why anyone would want me to buy health insurance is because they want to give free health care to illegal aliens. I see no other reason. Oh and those other people on welfare.

People on welfare already qualify for free health care. Illegals can already go to hospitals and skip on the bills, and do so daily. It's about control. The more control government has over the populace, the more those in government know they can get by with. As long as people *think* they're getting some benefit from government (whether they are or not), they know that people will continue to sit back and permit our Constitution to be trampled. It's all a giant shell game to keep our eyes off what's going on quietly behind the scenes.

Edit - I call BS on anyone who says requiring everyone to have insurance is going to get everyone covered and save the health care system. These people obviously don't understand how the health care system and insurance work. Traditional full coverage insurance is a huge part of the problem in health care today. When people can go to the doctor for every minor complaint they come across and only pay a minimal copay, they tend to overuse the system... thus increasing demand and cost. People are totally out of touch with the cost of health care when they aren't paying out of pocket a the time of service. Higher deductible major medical plans that cover preventative medicine at 100% are the way to go to reduce the cost of insurance. They're ultimately less costly for the consumer, and the consumer has a vested interest in understanding what they're being asked to pay for before consenting to unnecessary procedures or tests. They also think twice before going to the doctor over trivial ailments. I've been on this type plan for 3 years and have literally saved thousands of dollars. There's also the fact that laws governing health insurance live at state level. This prohibits insurers from offering individual plans across state lines, thus leading to smaller pools of people in plans. This, too, drives up cost. Insuring everyone won't fix a thing. It will just drive the cost higher, leading to people who can't afford it even when it's mandatory. The root problem in health care (cost) has not been addressed with this legislation. Don't believe me? Give it 10 years. Fewer people will be able to afford health care than can now.

My friends and I are in charge of organizing a mental health and eating disorders awareness week at our high school. We are trying to come up with ideas to get students interested and educated on the stuff we're focusing on (EDs, self harm, suicide, self-esteem, etc.)

Do you have any suggestions? We are going to have things like petitions and a No-Diet Day, as well as information on resources, but I'm looking for interactive ways to get the school engaged. Thanks!

I would have available on display, the definitions of what is depression? What is ED's? Etc. Also get questionnaires that say, for example, do I have depression? Its great that you will have resources too. But let people know, maybe by percentage wise. How many people do suffer from mental Illness and that they are not alone. That mental illness doesn't
discriminate. It can happen at any age. That it also can be hereditary. Mention that fact that name calling does hurt.
And sometimes the people who are made fun of, it can have a long term negative effect. Let people know that if they think someone may hurt themselfs or threaten suicide that it is OK to go to a peer. Maybe they may not think the person is serious, or maybe its a cry for help. Teach that we all need to get involved. That Mental Illness is real. And to the suffer it can be very devastating. That it is OK, to seek help. That seeking help is not a failure, but a step in the right direction.

How are the adult mental health services different to adolescent ones in the UK?

Ive been transferred, i am currently on an adolescent ward but im 18. So what to expect when im discharged and in adult services instead of CAMHS

they are functionally pretty similar laura, but you may find the decor less colourful, lol.. CAMHS tend to admit teenagers who are having severe self harm issues, eating disorders, emotional regulation issues, depression, psychosis, and various other illnesses. Adult services have very limited beds, sometimes as little as four for an entire borough or town and surrounding area. So they are much more selective about who they admit to hospital. A 15 year old who ODs, for example, may be admitted by CAMHS, but they would be unlikely to be admitted by adult services. i suppose then that the primary difference is, adult services expect you to put up with a lot more before they are willing to intervene.

adult services theoretically provide everything that CAMHS provide, but the criteria for accessing those services is somewhat different. i should think that you would be allocate a care coordinator, CPN, psychiatrist, psychologist, and social worker as routine when you are discharged from hospital. Your care co will be your main point of contact with services, so please use them as much as you can.

my best advice is to not be anxious, they want to support you in exactly the same way that CAMHS did; they just go about it slightly differently.

Not so much an answer but an observation, my dear pal was on death row in San Quentin and he often wrote about how so many guys became so mentally ill that they were no longer fit for execution. Sadly this proved to be true when he took his own life in June this year, says it all for me. Peace
