How do you find affordable health insurance?

How do you find affordable health insurance? on Knit Jones: Baby Pics

I have a friend of mine who lives in Florida. He had open heart surgery a few years ago. After the surgery was done, the Dr walked in the room and told my friend he really never needed the surgery to begin with. He is trying to find health insurance and he is having trouble finding it because of his heart condition even though now he doesn't have one. Most of the health insurance companies want more then $1500 a month to insure him. How does he find affordable insurance in the US?

Answer
You can try increasing the deductible. A higher deductible can result in a much lower premium. Your only other options would be Medicaid or a medical discount plan. Be very wary of these plans. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of âsave up to 80%â be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldnât find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company.

Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they wonât give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure theyâre still taking the card (many donât even know that theyâre listed as a provider) and that theyâre accepting new patients.

Answer
I beg to differ with Heather. The pre-existing clause in the portability act only refers to group policies. Individual policies will usually look back 5 - 10 years for surgeries and heart conditions. They can choose to decline you, rider the condtion for a period of time (1 year to permanent) or increase the premium, as you are finding out.

I am 21 yrs old, with no existing health conditions, but I make too much money to get coverage from the state. My employer does offer insurance but it's very expensive and the coverage isn't worth the amount of money they want me to spend.

Oh I don't know about that! we have Anthem BC/BS and we don't have a problem with it at all. For instance, my Oct, 07, neck fusion, $92,000, they paid $17,000 + and we paid our deductible plus about 600 out of pocket. Then with my Blood clot in my lung last year, the bill was around 37,000 for 3 1/2 days in the hosp. w various tests for clots, CT w the IV, ins paid around $8,000 contracted, we paid about 380. We have the PPO plus, as I have numerous conditions. $30.00 office copay, after you reach your yearly deductible, you're more or less home free. Don't knock it til you have dealt with it. We used to have several others, I'd rather have this. We've had a few problems with the 90-day by mail pharmacy but that end had nothing to do with the insurance. It was the pharmacy not understanding what the Dr. my Endocrinologist wrote out. We got it,rather the nurse at her office got it straight.
